In the ten years that I lived in New York City, the week of St. Patty's Day and March Madness was one of my favorite times. It was part "working man's" Spring Break, but at the same time a collegiate festivity. Investment bankers and traders would be standing shoulder to shoulder with policemen and firefighters in a damp, musky bar, raising pint glasses as the snare drums tapped and bagpipes wailed. On the opening days of the tournament, throughout the Upper East Side bars, Yuppies from rival tobacco road schools would start with friendly jeering but escalate into taunting and physical confrontations as the liquor overtook their better judgement.
Yes it was good times.
This week, Mo's Irish Pub, which recently opened in Vintage Park, will have a St. Patty's Day celebration which promises to be exciting.
As for March Madness, the only advice I can give is that going all 1 seeds is no fun. If you're going to face bracket destruction, and we all do, why not be the one who picked the 5-12 upset(s) or had Duke exiting in round 2. It makes for more humblebrag points on Facebook.
